This page provides an initial overview of the research funding offered by important national funding organisations (e.g. German Research Foundation, German federal government) and useful databases for carrying out research into funding opportunities. You will find contacts and services offered by TU Darmstadt, as well as links to other funding organisations, on the right-hand side.
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)
The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (“German Research Foundation”) promotes research at universities and non-university research institutions with a diverse range of funding programmes and funding lines that are open for all topics. The core task of the DFG in this process is the competitive selection of the best research projects.
The Individual Grants Programmes of the DFG aim at all scientists who have completed their doctorate and they finance thematically and temporally limited projects, e.g. in the form of Research Grants or programmes for promoting early career researchers. The Coordinated Programmes of the DFG promote local, regional or supra-regional scientific collaboration and the building of structures for particularly current fields of research.
In addition, the DFG funds research infrastructure (major instrumentation), awards highly renowned scientific prizes, and offers international programmes for promoting transnational project collaborations, international mobility and the internationalisation of German universities.
You will find an overview of all the funding programmes and other information on the DFG website.
Ongoing coordinated programmes at TU Darmstadt e.g. Collaborative Research Centres, can be found under Research Expertise.
The DFG Liaison Officer at TU Darmstadt provide scientists and researchers with advice on-site about the funding opportunities offered by the DFG (see right-hand side for contact details).
Research Funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)
The research funding provided by the BMBF is designed to finance the development and research into new ideas and technologies. Grants are available for projects covering a broad spectrum of fields from basic research into the natural sciences, environmentally sustainable development, new technologies, information and communication technologies, life sciences, work design via structured research funding at universities through to the promotion of innovation and technology transfer.
The BMBF presents its funding programmes and the latest calls for application by the German federal government on its website (mostly in German), and offers advisory services. Electronic applications are submitted via the application and offers system “easy”.
Please get in touch with the appropriate contact on the right-hand side if you would like to submit an application to the BMBF.
Research Funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi)
The central focus of the policy followed by the BMWi is to use the funding programme to strengthen the foundations for economic prosperity in Germany. Other goals of the BMWi funding are:
- sustainable growth and competitive opportunities for Germany
- strengthening small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
- promoting new technologies and innovations to keep industry competitive
One example of a funding programme from the BMWi that is open to all technologies and sectors is the Central Innovation Programme for SME (Zentrale Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand – ZIM). You can find other funding opportunities and current calls for application in the funding database of BMWi (in German) or contact the Federal Funding Advisory Service on Research and Innovation.
Please get in touch with the appropriate contact on the right-hand side if you would like to submit an application to the BMWi.
Research Funding from the German Federation of Industrial Research Associations (AiF Arbeitsgemeinschaft industrieller Forschungsvereinigungen “Otto von Guericke” e.V.)
The BMWi funds the so-called Industrial Collective Research (Industrielle Gemeinschaftsforschung, IGF) by the German Federation of Industrial Research Associations. The central aim of the AiF is to promote applied research and development that benefits small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In addition, the research associations organised within the AiF cooperate with a variety of partners from industry, science and government to promote different stages of innovation. The AiF offers funding instruments along the entire value-added chain from basic research and precompetitive research through to proprietary research, development and its industrial application in products and processes.
You can find out more information and the funding options on the AiF website.
Please get in touch with the appropriate contact on the right-hand side if you would like to submit an application to the AiF.
