The “Excellence Initiative for the Promotion of Science and Research at German Universities”, a joint programme funded by the German federal and state governments for promoting cutting-edge research in Germany, was launched in 2005. In a multi-stage competitive process, applications were accepted for three different funding lines – clusters of excellence, graduate schools and institutional strategies.

The projects selected for the first phase of the programme started in 2007 and were initially funded for the period up to 2012. In 2012, the projects for the second phase of the programme were selected. It was possible to apply for extensions and new projects with funding up to 2017.

You can find out more information about the Excellence Initiative and the three funding lines on the DFG website.
