The combination of additive and subtractive manufacturing enables the production of complex, high-precision components while improving material efficiency. This research investigates how the integration of Powder Bed Fusion – Laser Beam and CNC machining can minimize resource consumption and environmental impact in industrial manufacturing.
A Life Cycle Assessment of different production strategies enables a quantitative evaluation of hybrid manufacturing approaches. The resource consumption was allocated to individual geometric features of the sample part, linking part complexity with time and therefore resource cost to manufacture. This feature-based approach helps to identify if topology is a decision factor for adapting innovative production strategies like additive-subtractive manufacturing when aiming for maximum resource efficiency.
This research contributes to a more sustainable and intelligent production approach. It bridges ecological responsibility with industrial performance through data-driven hybrid process design.
