Agile Project Management in Academia (October 27th + November 24th 2020) – Online Training

As universities globally continue to professionalize themselves, project work becomes increasingly widespread in higher education: Be it in applying for large-scale European research grants, writing one’s dissertation, or organizing scientific conferences or summer schools – any such project requires good planning, proactive involvement of various stakeholders, and wisely employing the available time and resources. Some of those projects have complex requirements and no standard procedure is applicable. Such endeavours can only succeed if they are managed skilfully and in a highly adaptive manner. This workshop provides you with the tools and practices necessary to successfully initiate, plan, implement and conclude complex projects within and outside of higher education in an adaptive, respectively agile, way.

Contents

1. Agile vs. Traditional Project Management

  • Strengths and difficulties of traditional project management
  • Development of agile project management
  • Similarities and differences between the two approaches
  • There is no right or wrong – which approach is suitable for which project?

2. Plan and Execute/Conduct Agile Projects

  • Agile project management with Kanban and Scrum
  • Agile Boards, User Stories, Planning Poker, Retrospectives, Timeboxing, Burndown Charts and other agile auxiliary tools
  • Agile digital project management: working with Trello
  • Optional: developing new solutions with design thinking

3. The Agile Mindset

  • Responsibility, trust and transparency in the agile team
  • What is good enough? – Typical difficulties
  • „And how do we do this now?“ – Building an agile team

Methods

  • A practice- and dialogue-based training, taking into account participants’ experiences with project management
  • Hands-on skills, techniques, and instruments to successfully implement projects under the specific conditions of higher education
  • Working on concrete case-studies from higher education institutions worldwide to illustrate the four phases of project management
  • Selection of the specific case-studies by a pre-workshop survey needs-assessment among participants

After the Workshop,

  • you will know and understand the key mindset and principles of working agile
  • you will understand the strengths and difficulties of traditional vs. agile project management and which project requires which approach
  • you will have gained first-hand experience with the routines, instruments and rituals underlying agile project management with scrum
  • you will have a plan and be motivated to apply the approaches and practices in their daily work

Schedule: The workshop will begin and end with a zoom meeting. There will be three online-units of 120 minutes each. In-between, offline time will be used for individual tasks.

Target group: Doctoral candidates and Postdocs from all diciplines with basic project management skills, working on a project or planning one

Please note that a registration via the registration form is obligatory for all Ingenium events.

Courses are free of charge for early career researchers of the TU Darmstadt.

Please consider the following information concerning the registration procedure:

  • Please register for each event with a separate registration form.
  • Once your registration form is submitted, your registration is binding.
  • At least two weeks before the event starts, you will receive information about the status of your registration.
  • Registrations are recognised in the order in which they have been submitted.
  • Events will only take place if the necessary number of participants is reached.
  • If you cannot participate in an event for which you have already registered, please contact us immediately to allow people on the waiting list to take your place.
  • In the case of unexcused absence, future registrations will be considered subordinately.
  • If an event is announced in German, it will be conducted in German. If an event is announced in English, it will be conducted in English.

The following applies only to trainings in the qualification programme:

  • The registration form must be signed by your supervisor or adviser.
  • You can register for up to five events per programme.
