The TU Darmstadt Experience Weeks
At the beginning of each semester we organise the Experience Weeks (also called X-Weeks) to give all exchange students a good start at TU Darmstadt. During the X-Weeks, student tutors support you in organising your stay and you get the possibility to participate in our events.

Intensive German Course & Placement Test
The intensive German courses start on Monday, 5 March 2018, and last four weeks. Course hours are Monday to Friday from 08:55 to 12:25.
The placement test for these courses will take place on Friday, 2 March.
At the X-Weeks Kick-Off the team of TU Darmstadt's Department of International Affairs (Dezernat Internationales) will welcome you. You will also get to know your X-Weeks tutors and the other members of your tutor group. Together, you can start planning your first steps in Darmstadt and at TU.
Visa and Insurance Check
Students with a citizenship of a Non-EU country are required to have a visa or residence permit which covers the complete duration of their stay in Germany. To find out whether you need to apply for a residence permit at the Foreigner’s Office, members of the ISS team will check your visa/passport.|
It is a mandatory requirement for your enrolment (“Immatrikulation”) at university to have adequate health insurance. In order to make sure that your health insurance is sufficient, you need to see our health insurance consultant, who will check your insurance and give you advice. We recommend that you visit the Insurance Check as soon as possible so that you will be able to enrol and then collect your student ID card, which is also your ticket for public transport in Darmstadt and surroundings.
Information about Residence Permit for Non-EU nationals
At this information meeting you will be informed by the team of ISS about the procedure of how to obtain a residence permit (resp. how to extend your visa) and about the required documents. Your tutors will help you completing the paperwork. If you do not enter Germany with a visa that covers the complete duration of your stay, you should not miss this event!
You will be told if you should attend this event at ISS' visa check.
Guided Tour around Mathildenhöhe | Registration required!
From 1899 to 1914, the members of the Darmstadt Artists' Colony lived and worked on Mathildenhöhe. With the foldable map, which you will find in your Welcome Pack, we will go on a tour to explore and show you the historically significant site including the wedding tower – the landmark of Darmstadt, the plant tree grove, the Artist’s Colony museum and further sights.
Information on how to register for this event will follow soon.
Intercultural Workshop | Registration required!
This workshop is offered by Studienkolleg and provides assistance and answers to your questions on living and studying in a different culture. You will learn how to deal with the diverse expectations and attitudes at a German university and in a foreign country and how to reduce irritations.
Please note that there is a limited number of places and that you have to register for the workshop. You can register directly at Studienkolleg's homepage.
Let's explore Darmstadt together! You will get the chance to see important places and sights in Darmstadt by playing some team building games.
To receive your Athene card, the University's Computer Centre (“Hochschulrechenzentrum” – HRZ) needs a suitable photo of you. On these two dates you can have your photo taken and uploaded directly at the HRZ Fotostation. The only requirement is that you have already activated your TU-ID.
Unisport-Zentrum Facilties Tour | Registration required!
Taking a 2 hours walk to the main sport facilities you will see TU Darmstadt's sport grounds and learn about the wide-ranging (and mainly free of charge!) sport programme offered by Unisport-Zentrum.
Registration: Please send an e-mail re Facilities Tour to ISS stating the date at which you would like to attend the tour. Please check the table above for registration deadlines for the different tours.
The Welcome Day is the official welcoming event for international students at TU Darmstadt. There will be a short speech by the President of TU and a representative from the city of Darmstadt. Also, you will get a chance to meet the international coordinators of the different departments and further important institutions of TU (Unisport-Zentrum, Students' Representatives, etc.).
At the Welcome Party you will be able to meet other international and German students and enjoy a great evening dancing and partying in the famous student party venue “Schlosskeller”.
Right at the start of the X-Weeks, you will be assigned to a tutor group. Your tutor will be your direct contact person during your first days and weeks in Darmstadt. All tutors are former DOUBLE DEGREE or ERASMUS students and are familiar with intercultural questions and difficulties that may occur in the beginning of an exchange period.
Your tutor will support you with:
- your enrolment (“Immatrikulation”).
- opening a bank account.
- your registration with the city.
- further administrative and academic issues.
