Details for Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan
KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. No less than one-third of Sweden’s technical research and engineering education capacity at university level is provided by KTH. Education and research spans from natural sciences to all branches of engineering and includes Architecture, Industrial Management and Urban Planning. KTH has a global reputation for excellence and an internationally diverse student body.
During the Double Degree program with KTH Stockholm students have the opportunity to earn both institutions’ degrees (i.e. Wirtschaftsingenieur and Civilingenjiör).
In comparison with Industrial Engineering programs of TU Darmstadt, KTH Stockholm provides more diverse possibilities for specialization of industrial engineers. As KTH Stockholm is not dividing its program in Bachelor’s and Master’s level, this specialization needs to be selected before the students start their 5 year study program. Another interesting fact is that academic years are divided into 4 periods instead of 2 semesters. Courses are are taught in Swedish for the first 3 years of the program and English for the remaining. Furthermore they are more compact and intense. In the end of their studies, students have to write a six months-worth Master’s Thesis which accounts for 30 credits.
Double Degree students need to show sufficient language skills in Swedish in order to earn the “Civilingeniör”-degree.
Process of Studies
The regular period of study for a Double Degree in cooperation with the KTH Stockholm amounts to twelve semesters. Therefore only two more semesters in comparison to a regular Master’s degree are needed.
The exchange starts in the first semester (winter term) if the Master’s studies. Students of the Double Degree program spend the first 6 years of their studies at TU Darmstadt. Afterwards students study for 3 semesters at KTH Stockholm and finalize their studies the last 3 semesters at TU Darmstadt.
Completing an internship in Sweden is mandatory and the Master’s Thesis has to be written at TU Darmstadt.
Requirements & Application
Excellent course achievement is an important requirement for Double Degree applicants. Furthermore strong commitment to studies and the willingness to deliver more than in other exchange programs is expected.
The application period starts one year before the planned mobility. Therefore, students that want to apply for winter term 2016/17 or summer term 2017 should apply by the end of 2015. Further information can be found on the website of the Department for Law and Economics.
