As part of the strategic alliance between the Rhine-Main universities, an interdisciplinary and cross-university focus on medical technology is currently being established. A central component of this process is the bundling and comprehensive expansion of research and teaching in this area.

Behind the Rhine-Main universities are the renowned research universities Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and Technische Universität Darmstadt. They have been developing their partnership for over ten years and expanded it into a strategic alliance with the conclusion of a framework agreement in 2015.

Since the three universities in the Frankfurt-Rhine-Main metropolitan region are located in close proximity and offer a wide range of subjects from medicine and the natural sciences to the humanities, social sciences and engineering sciences, they form the ideal basis for medical technology as a science location.

In addition to various medical technology research projects, the expansion of teaching is also a result of the joint focus. The winter semester 2018/19 will see the start of the new collaborative degree programme B.Sc. Biomedical Engineering between the Technische Universität Darmstadt and the Goethe University of Frankfurt am Main. A master's course in Biomedical Engineering following the bachelor's degree will start in the winter semester 2021/2022.
