Since 2009, the Junior Research Group has maintained diverse relationships with Nicaragua. Initially, these relationships were based on research work in the context of doctoral theses related to the implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management and Payment for Hydrological Ecosystem Services as well as multi-criteria assessments of complex water infrastructure systems. Since then, there has also been punctual cooperation with Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit (GiZ) in Nicaragua.
In addition to many research visits, a number of student thesis projects were also carried out in Nicaragua during this time. Following a PhD seminar in Nicaragua at the end of 2011, a student from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering was placed in Nicaragua for the first time at the end of 2012 for an internship in Nicaragua. The internship was completed at Universidad Tecnológica La Salle (ULSA) in León and marks the beginning of institutional cooperation. This cooperation has been continuously intensified in recent years through the continuous posting of trainees from the TU Darmstadt to ULSA.
In 2012, the Universidad Tecnólogica La Salle in León, Nicaragua, has become an official partner university and an intensive exchange program was initiated.
