Sm-based ThMn12-type structures are known to exhibit comparable intrinsic magnetic properties in comparison to the benchmark Nd2Fe14B. Even though the intrinsic properties are comparable, the ThMn12-type structures does not show reasonable extrinsic properties. In this work, we reported on the formation of twins and their effect on the magnetic properties. The studies were carried out at different length scales starting from thin-films to bulk single- and poly crystalline samples. The experimental findings were supported by the theoretical predictions and we show the detrimental effects of twins on the magnetic properties of ThMn12-type structures. The scientific cooperation with our colleagues from MPIE Düsseldorf, Institute Neel, Danube University Krems and University of Exeter is highly appreciated.
