DFG continues funding for Collaborative Research Centre / Transregio (CRC/TRR) 270

The perfect moment for our future – new magnets for sustainable energy technologies

2023/11/24

Strong permanent magnets for use in wind turbines and electric motors, or state-of-the-art functional materials for magnetic cooling – both are a keystone for the energy transition and essential for a low emissions future. The Collaborative Research Center (CRC) called “HoMMage” has been funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG) for the past 4 years. Now, “HoMMage” is granted funding for another 4 years by DFG. The second funding period will start on 1st of January 2024.

Together with the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research Düsseldorf (MPIE), the Ernst Ruska Center for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons at Forschungszentrum Jülich (FZJ) and the University of Wuppertal (BUW), researchers at both applicant universities – TU Darmstadt and University Duisburg-Essen – are developing new processes for the production of innovative magnetic materials. Materials scientists, physicists, chemists and process engineers are working together on magnetic materials, both by changing individual atoms and by deforming and reshaping entire workpieces. In the new funding period, the consortium is increasingly focusing on modern technologies such as additive manufacturing (AM) and machine learning (ML) using artificial intelligence to accelerate the discovery of suitable compositions and ideal microstructures as well as suitable resource-saving manufacturing processes.

With the integrated research training group, the alliance is making an important contribution to the training of young scientists who will develop and shape the technologies and applications of tomorrow.

The successful and forward-looking research of the now (almost) finished first funding period is underlined by the approval of three so-called “knowledge transfer projects” by the DFG . These projects, initiated by the SFB/TRR270, serve to directly transfer the knowledge gained into industry-relevant technologies. They will start on 1st of January 2024 as well, together with the new CRC/TRR funding period.
