Hysteresis design by nanoscale phase composition in rare earth-Co based thin films

Overview

Thin film model systems with artificially composed phase and microstructure grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) are used to identify each specific contribution to the hysteresis behaviour of Sm2(Co, Cu, Zr, Fe)17. MBE allows to control phase compositions, layer thicknesses, and stacking in order to correlate these well-defined structural properties with the domain-wall pinning strength. The results of this fundamental study are transferred to nucleation-type magnets and used to design emerging “green” and sustainable permanent magnet materials for the future.
