Overview
Tailoring magnetic hysteresis in permanent magnets is generally achieved for example by alloying or by varying the (micro)structure. Only a combination of different experimental techniques and theory can unravel the complexity of internal magnetic interactions and orbital contributions to magnetization and anisotropy on the one side and additional effects due to the presence of different phases and phase boundaries. Materials properties cannot only be tuned by synthesis procedures but also by external stimuli such as pressure, temperature, electric field, or irradiation with microwaves or light. Within this project, we want to exploit X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and microscopy to reveal the role of these parameters.
