B01
Functional magnetocaloric materials

Overview

In B01, we study the fundamental processes that lead to large field-induced temperature changes for two different classes of magnetocaloric materials, one with an isostructural transition (La-Fe-Si system) and one with a crystal symmetry breaking (Heusler alloys). In order to study the main contributions of intrinsic parameters, kinetics, and microstructure to the phase transition and its thermal/magnetic hysteresis, a unique simultaneous measurement setup is established. It enables a direct study of the correlations of structural, magnetic, and electronic subsystems to the magnetocaloric effect represented by the magnetic field induced adiabatic temperature change.
