A Wide Range of Services for Career Entry
The ICS RM (opens in new tab) offers a broad range of workshops (opens in new tab), individual coaching, and a mentoring programme. These activities cover various topics, including career entry, entrepreneurship, and new ways of working. Students learn, for example:
- how to structure a professional CV according to German standards,
- how to prepare effectively for job interviews,
- which steps are necessary to start your own business,
- how to visualise data, and
- which skills are important for modern leadership and new work environments.
Most of the offers take place online and last only a few hours, making them easy to integrate into everyday student life. One important tip: these workshops can already be attended at the beginning of your studies. They are an excellent way to prepare early and step by step for entering the job market.
In addition to the workshops, the International Career Service Rhein-Main provides further digital resources that allow students to learn flexibly and independently. Did you find an interesting job and want to apply right away? Short videos offer practical tips on writing cover letters and preparing for job interviews. The RAISE tool (opens in new tab) also supports students in discovering regional initiatives, programmes, and associations in order to build contacts outside the university. A strong network can be a decisive advantage when searching for a job.

My Personal Experience with the ICS RM
During my studies, I participated in several workshops offered by the International Career Service Rhein-Main and had very positive experiences. The events focusing on the German application process were particularly helpful, as many aspects of this process are not sufficiently covered in regular coursework. Especially for international students, the formal and cultural differences in application procedures are not always immediately clear – and this is where the ICS RM provided valuable guidance.
The workshops did not only convey theoretical knowledge, but also offered very practical insights into how a convincing CV is structured and what recruiters actually pay attention to. Through specific examples, exercises, and exchanges with other participants, I was able to critically reflect on my own application documents and improve them in a targeted manner. I particularly appreciated the open and supportive atmosphere, in which questions were explicitly encouraged.
Furthermore, the workshops helped me to gain more confidence regarding my future career entry. I not only acquired new skills, but also developed a better understanding of how to communicate my strengths clearly and effectively. Overall, I felt very well supported – regardless of the stage I was at in my career planning.
Especially Relevant for International Students
The services offered by the ICS RM are specifically designed for international students and students with a history of migration. However, there are usually enough places available for all other students as well. One important point that the ICS RM regularly emphasises – and which I can confirm from my own experience – concerns German language skills: for students enrolled in English-taught programmes, it is highly recommended to learn German during their studies. Most employers in Germany still require good German language skills, and purely English-speaking positions are comparatively rare. The Language Resource Centre (opens in new tab) of TU Darmstadt offers German courses on all levels for students.

ICS RM – What is it?
The International Career Service Rhein-Main is a joint project of five Hessian universities (Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, Goethe University Frankfurt, Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, RheinMain University of Applied Sciences and Darmstadt Technical University) with Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz as an associated partner in Rhineland-Palatinate. The collaboration with other universities allows for a wide range of topics and formats to be offered, with each university contributing its expertise and taking responsibility for different areas of focus.
The ICS RM is funded by the European Union and the State of Hesse.
