Requirements for admission:
1. Requirements for admission to the Master’s degree programme (and thereby university enrolment) are comprised of a “Bachelor of Education” degree from the same programme or an equivalent degree whereas the combination of professional field of study and subject must be the same in the Bachelor’s and in the Master’s programme. If the combination is not the same, the applicant’s admission is subject to further provisions. Specific degree entrance requirements may be found here and in the competences description. 3. Under certain conditions, graduates from applied universities may be admitted to the Master of Education programme subject to further provisions. For further questions please contact the departmental advisor’s office (Fachstudienberatung).
Admission Procedure: As long as the requirements for admission (suitability test) are fulfilled, there is no restriction on admission.
Part-time Studies: possible under specific conditions
Programme Start: winter semester is recommended; summer semester is possible, but without degree completion guarantee
Application Deadline: July 15 (for winter semester); January 15 (for summer semester).

Brief Description

Bachelor of Education + Master of Education -> Teaching at Vocational Schools

The programme Teaching at Vocational Schools at the TU Darmstadt consists of two connected study programmes:

  • first, the Bachelor of Education programme (6 semesters; vocational field of study) and
  • subsequently, the Master of Education programme (4 semesters; subject of general education/subject studies).

Only the completion of both the Bachelor of Education AND the Master of Education is equivalent to the first state examination in the state of Hesse and therefore mandatory for the admission to the preparatory period (teaching practice) or the teaching profession.

Additionally, from winter semester 2018/19 on programmes for a third subject (Ergänzungsstudium Lehramt) are scheduled to take effect.

Methodology of the Vocational Field of Study within the Bachelor’s Programme: in accordance with the selected subject (a total of 10 CP), practical studies in schools 2 (10 CP);

Subject Studies of the Subject of General Education within the Master’s Programme: lectures, seminars, tutorials about central topics of German philology (a total of 50 CP);

Methodology of Subject Studies: 1. one seminar “Fachdidaktik” (compulsory, 6 CP) and 2. one seminar “Begleitetes Selbststudium” (this seminar corresponds in terms of content to core areas of the methodology of subject studies, 4 CP);

Pedagogy and Social Sciences: e.g. Pedagogic Psychology, Teaching/Learning Research, Applied Teaching/Learning Psychology (a total of 25 CP);

The Master’s Thesis (15 CP) may be written in the subject studies of the subject, in the teaching methodology of the subject, in Pedagogy, or in the teaching methodology of the vocational field of study; further

With the Master of Education, the students will acquire a further professional qualification. Another requirement for entering the teaching profession in Hesse is the completion of the subsequent preparatory period (teaching practice).
