All Business Engineering degree programmes at the TU Darmstadt are defined by their distinct interdisciplinary nature. They contain parts of both the Business Studies (business administration and economics) and Law on the one hand and Engineering on the other to nearly the same extent.
The Master’s degree programmes in Business Engineering focuses on a smaller scale on the engineering area of specialisation than the non-business Engineering programmes. With respect to their technical field of studies, the students of Business Engineering otherwise attend the same courses as the students enrolled in the corresponding purely technical Master’s programmes.
The Master of Science programme Business Engineering – Technical Field of Studies Electrical Engineering and Information Technology deepens and expands the skills and knowledge acquired in the Bachelor’s degree programme for planning, design, and management of electrical, information and communications technology systems. Located at the interface of Business Studies, and Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, the programme is particularly characterised by its research orientation. The Master’s degree includes various other forms of learning to work scientifically (seminar papers, research papers, Master’s Thesis) in order to gain initial experience in basic and applied research. The programme caters to personal preferences by offering numerous electives and areas of specialisation. Regarding specialisation and individual design of the study plan using the model plans for orientation, the students should seek advice from the representatives of the respective areas of focus at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. Additionally, we recommend that you attend the introductory lecture “Introduction to the Master’s Degree Programme” offered by the department at the beginning of your Master’s programme.
An additional internship serves the qualification of students. A completed commercial training or a completed vocational training in the field of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology may be taken into account completely or partially. If possible, the 12-week internship should be completed before the start of the programme; it must, however, be completed no later than by the day of registering for the last subject exam. During the programme, it is possible to do the internship abroad as well as spend entire semesters in a foreign country.
The Master of Science in Business Engineering – Technical Field of Study Electrical Engineering and Information Technology is divided as follows into three subject areas.
The first subject area comprises Legal and Business Studies and consists of the following five subsections:
- Mandatory Subject Area: Apart from courses on Micro and Macroeconomics II, the students are required to select modules on Quantitative Methods.
- Elective Subject Area A: For this area, the students can choose from courses from the catalogues of Legal Studies (“[European] Law for businesses” or “Electronic Compliance”) and Business Administration (“Strategic Management A or B”).
- Elective Subject Area B: The students are required to choose an elective module from the catalogues of Legal Studies, Business Administration, or Economics.
- Area of Specialisation: The students can attend specialized modules from additional catalogs of Legal Studies, Business Administration, or Economics.
- Master’s seminar: The students are required to work on a scientific problem within a seminar in one of the three Legal and Business Studies disciplines the students can choose individually.
In the second area, the Electrical Engineering and Information Technology major, the students first choose one of seven areas of focus:
- Automation Engineering
- Computer-assisted Electrodynamics
- Data Technology
- Electrical Power Engineering
- Integrated Micro and Nanotechnologies
- Micro and Precision Engineering
- Communications Technology and Sensor Systems
The seven elective subject areas recommend the structure of the core competencies ETiT and the areas of focus ETiT using corresponding model study plans. In the field of Core Competencies ETiT, there is a choice of mandatory and elective subjects. The Areas of Focus ETiT add further elective subjects and provide the possibility to contribute a minimum of one to a maximum of two internships, seminars, and/or project seminars.
As the final module, the research paper and the Master’s Thesis conclude the programme. For three months in each case, the students work independently on a scientific topic in the field of Legal and Business Studies and in the field of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. The research paper and the Master’s Thesis may not be written in the same field. In justified exceptional cases and with the permission from the board of examiners, the two three-month-long papers may be replaced by a more extensive (six-month-long) Master’s Thesis with an interdisciplinary topic. Advice for Prospective M.Sc. Students
While a Bachelor’s degree focuses mainly on the fundamentals of the field, the Master’s degree serves to upgrade the qualifications of graduates and to analyse the subject based on research. The Master’s degree focuses more than the Bachelor’s degree on enabling and requiring students to adopt their own major focus.
For these reasons it is recommended that students complete a Master’s degree.

Business engineers can choose from a multitude of career opportunities. Their skills and knowledge are particularly in demand where technical and commercial fields of activity meet. Graduates of the Business Engineering – Technical Field of Study Electrical Engineering and Information Technology programme may find employment in the electrical industry, with energy suppliers, in communications technology businesses, and in business consultancy.
Graduates (usually with a Master’s degree) work in the areas of production control, quality assurance and process monitoring, controlling, marketing, or in management positions.
