At this year's iGEM competition in Boston (USA), the TU Darmstadt team won prizes in several categories, including a gold medal and two special prizes.

The aim of the competition (iGEM stands for international genetically engineered machine competition) is to use synthetic biology to develop solutions for abstract and real problems and to network on an international scale. This year, students of biology, chemistry, biomolecular engineering and computer science joined forces to develop a standardized manufacturing process for virus-like particles (VLPs). VLPs are protein envelopes that mimic viruses externally, but do not contain nucleic acids and are therefore not infectious. Due to their many properties, VLPs offer a wide range of applications.
