Genetic information is stored in form of chromosomes within each living cell on earth. The mechanisms responsible for maintaining these chromosomes have been studied for many years but are not yet fully understood. We use new DNA assembly technologies to study chromosome biology by construction of simplified prototype synthetic chromosomes. This learning-by-building approach will help us to fully understand what actually makes a chromosome a chromosome.
