Futury Summer School

The Futury Summer School is a platform that promotes exchange between scientists, innovators, investors and experts in the emerging field of synthetic biology. The main objective of the Futury Summer School is to provide participants with the opportunity to develop and advance innovative business ideas. With a limited number of participants an intimate and interactive atmosphere will be created to foster the exchange of knowledge, experiences and ideas.

From Idea to Start-Up

When: 7. – 10. September 2026

Where: Darmstadt & Frankfurt

Who: Young researchers (Master’s, PhD, or Post-Doc) with a background in biology, chemistry, physics, synthetic biology, biochemistry, materials science, engineering and economy.

The Futury Summer School will open on 7. and 8. September with a symposium at the TU Darmstadt, to which all interested parties are invited.

Turn your research into a Start-Up opportunity

The Futury Summer School is designed for researchers who want to explore the entrepreneurial potential of their work and transform innovative ideas into viable business concepts. The goal is to develop a compelling Start-Up idea and create a professional pitch deck that could serve as the foundation for a future venture.

In the Start-Up world, even the most promising technology needs a strong story. To attract investors, partners, and early customers, entrepreneurs must demonstrate not only technical excellence but also commercial potential, market relevance, and scalability. A convincing pitch is often the key to turning an idea into reality.

During the first two days, participants will gain insights from renowned researchers, successful entrepreneurs, and innovation experts. Through interactive sessions and workshops, they will identify opportunities, explore market needs, and generate their own Start-Up ideas.

Following the idea selection process, participants will be matched into interdisciplinary teams.

On days three and four the teams will work intensively on refining their concepts with the support of a dedicated coaching and mentoring team. Together, they will develop their value proposition, explore customer needs and market opportunities, define a business model, and create a professional investor-style pitch deck.

The Summer School culminates in a Final Pitch Event, where teams present their Start-Up concepts to an expert jury. This is an opportunity to showcase your vision, receive valuable feedback, expand your network and take the first steps toward launching a real Start-Up.

Day 4

Pitch Day & Award Ceremony

Present your startup concept and pitch deck to an expert jury. Receive feedback from entrepreneurs and innovation professionals, compete for awards, and celebrate your achievements.

Trainings

Bartosz Kajdas

Bartosz Kajdas is an experienced expert in supporting academic Start-Ups. Since 2014, he has accompanied more than 200 academic Start-Ups in their early stages at TU Darmstadt and the University of Heidelberg, and conducted more than 1,000 consultations with founders from different scientific disciplines. His passion is to promote and support the growth of innovative companies.

Organisation

Heinz Koeppl

Heinz Koeppl is director of the Centre for Synthetic Biology at TU Darmstadt and professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering and adjunct professor at the Department of Biology. He is currently also heading the graduate school "Life Science Engineering" at TU Darmstadt. He holds a M.Sc. in physics from Graz Karl-Franzens University and a Ph.D in electrical engineering from Graz University of Technology, Austria.

Melanie Mikosch-Wersching

Melanie Mikosch-Wersching is Science Communication Officer for the research field Matter and Materials, in which Synthetic Biology is established as one of the strategic profile areas of TU Darmstadt.
