Professional and career goals

My aim is to make a contribution to the robotics industry and/or research.

Focus and special interests in course of study

The main focus of my studies is the economic fine-tuning and optimisation of in-company and intercompany processes using mathematical modelling. From a technical viewpoint, I’ve focussed on robotics and machine learning.

What do I especially like about my studies at the Technische Universität Darmstadt?

The Industrial Engineering course here is very interdisciplinary in nature and I truly enjoyed getting my Bachelor’s degree in the subject. Apart from that, I appreciate the broad spectrum of research at the Technische Universität Darmstadt. The opportunity to interact with people in other technical fields was what motivated me to complete my Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. To me, the interweaving of the various disciplines seems more and more important. And finally, the university also has a broad spectrum of leisure activities that supplement our daily life as students in an enjoyable way.

What has the scholarship from the Thomas Weiland Foundation enabled me to do?

The scholarship has made it possible for me to complete a double degree, which I would not have managed otherwise due to the time required. Apart from that, it’s also allowed me to work at internships outside of this region. Finally, I appreciate the interaction with the other scholarship recipients.

Professional and career goals

In the future I’d like to work in research and development of electrical engines in the automobile industry, or in the field of large-scale power generators. In line with my interdisciplinary Bachelor’s studies in Industrial Engineering, my dream job would be in engineering in connection with management.

Focus and special interests in course of study

In both my Bachelor’s degree courses I chose a minor in Electrical Energy Technology, because I’m especially interested in electrical machines, either generator- or engine-driven.

What do I especially like about my studies at the Technische Universität Darmstadt?

I like the wide variety of classes and subjects which comes along with the well-established professorship in Electrical Engineering at the Technische Universität Darmstadt. I especially like the varied classes offered by the Institute of Electrical Energy Conversion, which has a lot of lectures on topics related to electrical machines. Apart from that I find that the professors in my minor subject are motivational and have a lot of expertise.

What has the scholarship from the Thomas Weiland Foundation enabled me to do?

After a period of studying in the U.S. during my Bachelor’s degree course, the scholarship has allowed me to finance an additional period abroad during my Master’s studies. Also I don’t have to work while at university, so I can concentrate fully on my studies and club activities.

Professional and career goals

After finishing my studies I’d like to work in a field at the interface of technology and business, in line with my study subjects. I’m especially interested in product development, new technologies, and digitalisation.

Focus and special interests in course of study

This is why I chose a minor in Micro- and Precision Technology for the technical part of my studies. In this field I gained initial experience in product development by participating in a variety of semester projects. I especially enjoyed a project developing a dehydration warning device, from collecting basic medical information to creating the electrical and mechanical components. My business-related minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management includes developing products and business models as well as dealing with modern technologies; the focus is on digital products, along with physical products, and how to market them.

What do I especially like about my studies at the Technische Universität Darmstadt?

My Master’s degree studies at the Darmstadt University of Technology have given me the opportunity to choose various subjects to focus on, based on my interests. I can attend classes to continue learning about subjects that I found especially interesting during my Bachelor’s studies. I especially like that the professors and lecturers address the topic of innovative technologies over and over in their classes, and put them in an interdisciplinary context.

At lectures, seminars, and in our final project work, the university also makes it possible to make direct contact with companies from various sectors. This enabled me to complete my Master’s internship at a medical technology company that I had been introduced to in my technical minor.

What has the scholarship from the Thomas Weiland Foundation enabled me to do?

The scholarship from the Thomas Weiland Foundation has allowed me to concentrate fully on my Master’s degree studies. In addition to my studies at the Technische Universität Darmstadt, I’m planning to spend a semester abroad in Switzerland this coming autumn. The Foundation’s support will help me to finance parts of my stay.

My aim is a career in aerospace research and development.

Focus and special interests in course of study

In my studies I’ve learned about a wide variety of topics related to aerospace; the subjects I’ve chosen to focus on are Fluid Mechanics, Aerodynamics, Structural Mechanics, Flight Systems, and Numerical Processes.

What do I especially like about my studies at the Technische Universität Darmstadt?

As a student, I appreciate the high quality of teaching at the university, and the wide-ranging skills and knowledge we have access to in our studies. The Technische Universität Darmstadt also maintains relationships with numerous partner universities and this gives students the opportunity to complete parts of their studies abroad. Apart from excellence in teaching, the university has a very good reputation in research. For me personally, the plentiful resources in the Mechanical Engineering department are an advantage; these include the location in Griesheim, where we learn about Flight Systems and Aerodynamics, and, in the field of Numerical Processes, the Computational Engineering graduate academy.

What has the scholarship from the Thomas Weiland Foundation enabled me to do?

The scholarship has allowed me to concentrate on my studies with no other worries. In addition to an internship in industry that I’ve planned as part of my Master’s studies, I’m going to spend one semester working at the Institute of Aeroelastics at the German Aerospace Center in Göttingen. The scholarship will largely pay for this stay.

Professional and career goals

After finishing my Master’s degree next year, I’d like to focus more intensively on the interface between psychology and computer science. I’m especially interested in automated systems which help people with everyday tasks and health-related issues, whether through robotics and learning systems, serious games or brain-computer interfaces.

Focus and special interests in course of study

In my Master’s studies I’m currently focussing on machine learning – because all the subjects I’m interested in and named above don’t work without learning, and because I’m fascinated by the applications that are already possible thanks to machine learning. Besides this, later in my studies I’d like to gain additional knowledge of robotics and brain-computer interfaces.

What do I especially like about my studies at the Technische Universität Darmstadt?

The university has made it possible for me to combine Psychology and Computer Science in one course, which is still a rarity at German universities. With a Cognitive Science Center currently being set up, fortunately there’ll be even more course offerings in this field.

What has the scholarship from the Thomas Weiland Foundation enabled me to do?

The scholarship from the Thomas Weiland Foundation has allowed me to invest as much time as I can in my studies. Apart from this, I’ve had the opportunity to meet students from lots of different courses who are as motivated and enthusiastic about their studies as I am.

Professional and career goals

After finishing my studies, I’d like to get my doctorate and then do research in industry or at an institute for red biotechnology.

Focus and special interests in course of study

I’m especially fascinated by the idea of developing new medications or identifying the molecular reasons for certain illnesses using genetically manipulated organisms (GMOs). This is why my studies have focussed on genetic technology, especially stem cell biology.

What do I especially like about my studies at the Technische Universität Darmstadt?

Studies at the Darmstadt University of Technology are very hands-on and there are lots of classes to choose from in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Apart from this, the university supports interdisciplinary projects like iGEM (a synthetic biology competition) and maintains numerous contacts with biotech companies, making it easier for students to get their foot in the door.
