Professional and career goals

I would like to contribute to building more sustainable, resource-saving houses, as well as the share of so-called “grey energy”, i.e. of the energy required to manufacture and supply the materials used. I see potential not only in in the research of new possibilities, but also in the further establishment of existing concepts.

Focus and special interests in course of study

I have a special interest and talent for the constructive subjects, i.e. those in which one learns to design supporting structures and to construct a building. At the same time, I find infrastructure planning exciting as well, because you can always see examples of how it can work well or even not so well in everyday life.

What do I especially like about my studies at the Technische Universität Darmstadt?

At the TU Darmstadt, I particularly like the wide range of opportunities for consolidation and choice. It also enables you to, for example, get a taste of non-subject areas through the Studium Generale.

What has the scholarship from the Thomas Weiland Foundation enabled me to do?

The scholarship from the Thomas Weiland Foundation enables me to broaden my horizons in my studies and also to listen to subjects that do not directly belong to my choice of focus, as I am not dependent on a part-time job due to the financial support. In addition it's a chance to get me involved outside the university.

M.Sc. Materials Science

Professional and career goals

I am currently planning to do a doctorate after my master's degree and then join an international company in the field of research & development. The energy turnaround is (also) a material turnaround, which is why I would like to try to do my part in the future.

Focus and special interests in course of study

There is no classical focus or given specialisation in the English-language Master's programme in Materials Science. Instead, we can specialize in a wide range of subjects on our own. Here I am particularly interested in the material class of ceramics, which plays an important role both as a construction material and as a functional material. In the area of functional materials, I see an even more interesting potential for research and innovation.

What do I especially like about my studies at the Technische Universität Darmstadt?

What I particularly like about my materials science course is the strong interdisciplinarity at the interface between engineering and natural sciences. The (further) development of materials enables new technical advances and innovations in a wide variety of areas. The compulsory elective area allows us to take language courses in other subject areas, for example. It should be emphasized that materials science at the TU Darmstadt is based in its own department. There I like the almost familiar atmosphere and the very good contact to the professors, who are always available to answer your questions.

In addition, thanks to the international network of the TU Darmstadt, I was able to complete a semester abroad at Bordeaux INP in France during my bachelor's degree.

What has the scholarship from the Thomas Weiland Foundation enabled me to do?

The scholarship supports me in financing my stay abroad in the third master semester. According to the current status, I would like to spend this either in Singapore (NTU) or in South Korea (KAIST). In addition, I had thought about an additional research internship in non-European English-speaking countries, which is now also financially more feasible. In addition, the meetings of the Thomas Weiland Foundation give me the opportunity to get to know other scholarship holders and thus expand my network.

Professional and career goals

After completing my master's degree, I would like to help solve the big problems of our time. I see my contribution to this as a doctorate in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and a subsequent international career. I am convinced that the increased use of artificial intelligence in all areas of society can solve the great problems of climate change, demography, security policy, urbanization and environmental pollution, and create more security and quality of life for a global world civilization. However, this requires an understanding of the relationships between technologies and their application in the context of a globalised market economy.

Focus and special interests in course of study

In my master studies I will deal in the technical area with automation technology and artificial intelligence, as well as in the economic area with the topics of the discrete optimization of problems from the economy, as well as the interaction of technology and innovation management. Usually it is not the technologies and inventions themselves, but their economic commercialization and exploitation, which have the great influence on social life, which I think should be understood as a responsible and future-oriented industrial engineer.

What do I especially like about my studies at the Technische Universität Darmstadt?

What I particularly like about my studies at the TU Darmstadt is, on the one hand, the scientific and academic way of working, which at the same time also deals with very practical problems and provides numerous cooperations with companies. In addition, my course of studies offers me a wide range of courses from a wide variety of fields, and thus allows me to set specific accents in terms of content during my studies.

What has the scholarship from the Thomas Weiland Foundation enabled me to do?

The scholarship of the Thomas Weiland Foundation enables me to fully focus on my studies and to gain further, very enriching, practical experience abroad, which will be an advantage for my later career. M.Sc. Computer Science

Professional and career goals

According to my interests, I would like to contribute to the application and further development of automated natural language processing and deep learning in the future. I am also considering a PhD in this field.

Focus and special interests in course of study

In the main subject of my master's degree, I am mainly interested in deep learning in combination with natural language processing. This area of research is already of great importance for intelligent systems today and will, in my opinion, continue to play a central role in the future, since language is still one of the most powerful tools for representing complex facts.

However, the progress of deep learning also raises some socially relevant ethical questions about the explainability and bias of such systems and any resulting privacy and data protection cuts, which I would also like to address.

In addition, I am engaged (especially in my minor subject Economics & Law) in the research field of Operations Research, which is located at the interface between business administration, computer science and mathematics, in order to model and optimize real problems.

What do I especially like about my studies at the Technische Universität Darmstadt?

Especially in the field of computer science, the TU Darmstadt is extraordinarily broad and up-to-date, so that you can choose from many different courses to deepen your own interests.

The wide range of language courses on offer and the numerous agreements with international universities, which make it possible for many students to spend semesters abroad, were and are culturally, personally and professionally very enriching for me.

What has the scholarship from the Thomas Weiland Foundation enabled me to do?

For me, the scholarship is an important support during my stay abroad in the Master's program. After my return, it will help me in Darmstadt to concentrate on my studies without having to forego further deepening and extracurricular activities such as learning foreign languages.
