B.Sc. Chemistry

Master’s degree course

M.Sc. Chemistry

Professional and career goals

After graduation, I plan to pursue a PhD in the field of technical chemistry. I would like to contribute to the raw material and energy transition by investigating new, heterogeneous catalyst systems. Following my doctorate, I intend to continue my research in the chemical industry on the development of new process ideas.

Focus and special interests in course of study

Catalysis and spectroscopy have particularly fascinated me during my studies. The interdisciplinary field of catalysis is not only chemically interesting, but also of central importance in society. Catalysts are a key technology for future challenges in the energy and raw material transition, and moreover, about 20% of the world economy depends, directly or indirectly, on catalytic processes. In order to be able to understand these processes, in my studies I mainly deal with the structural composition of inorganic solids, the application of catalysts in technical processes and various spectroscopic methods to be able to follow processes on a molecular level.

What do I especially like about my studies at the Technische Universität Darmstadt?

Especially the great variety and quality of the courses at the TU Darmstadt push me further. After having gained broad knowledge from different disciplines in the bachelor's program, it is possible to design the master's program according to one's own interests. In addition, the TU Darmstadt is one of the few universities in Germany where it is possible to study with a focus on technical chemistry. In addition, it is possible in the chemistry program to work on your own research-relevant tasks under the guidance of doctoral students during the master's program, which allows you to contribute to current research at an early stage.

What has the scholarship from the Thomas Weiland Foundation enabled me to do?

The funding from the Thomas Weiland Foundation enables me to concentrate on my studies and still allows me enough time for my own interests. Especially at the current time, I am very grateful for this support and look forward to exchanging ideas with other motivated scholarship holders.

Bachelor’s degree course

Chemistry B.Sc. at the TU Darmstadt

Master’s degree course

Chemistry M.Sc. at TU Darmstadt

The first year of my master studies I am studying abroad at the School of Chemical Engineering at Aalto University in Espoo, Finland.

Professional and career goals

After finishing my Master's degree, I plan to do a PhD because I personally don't want to leave the university environment yet, especially after I could already experience what it is like to do research properly in my Bachelor's thesis. After a PhD, I am currently planning to work on the research and development of new catalysts and techniques that help to solve the big problems of today, such as climate change and energy transition, through chemistry. It is still open whether I will continue to work in academia, an institute or in the chemical industry. My doctorate will give me a better insight into university research. This will help me decide on my career path.

Focus and special interests in course of study

In my master's program, I specialized in physical, technical and inorganic chemistry. In my opinion, this is the perfect combination to pursue my interest in chemical catalysis. Catalysis is an important aspect of today's chemical industry and is also of utmost importance for future-oriented applications in terms of energy- and resource-saving production processes. I consider the elucidation of the specific mechanisms underlying a wide variety of catalysis systems and their optimization as an interface between physical and technical chemistry. With the synthesis of many heterogeneous catalysts as well as the discovery of new catalysts, I see the overlap with inorganic chemistry on the other side. With my choice of focus, I hope to be well equipped to pursue and deepen my interest in catalysis.

What do I especially like about my studies at the Technische Universität Darmstadt?

I chose the TU Darmstadt for my bachelor's program because the chemistry department in Darmstadt covers many subject areas and the bachelor's program is correspondingly broad. With this broad technical basis from the bachelor's program, there is then the possibility to specialize in an equally broad selection of subjects in the master's program. Thus, chemistry at the TU Darmstadt enabled me to specialize in exactly those subjects that reflect my personal interests. In addition, especially technical chemistry, which is not offered at many universities in Germany, has excellent contacts in the chemical industry, which can facilitate a possible career entry into the chemical industry.

What has the scholarship from the Thomas Weiland Foundation enabled me to do?

The Thomas Weiland Foundation scholarship gives me great financial independence. It means I can do without part-time jobs and thus concentrate entirely on my studies. This also means that I can, for example, deal with topics that go beyond the normal lecture material or that I have enough free time to get involved in the student council. In addition, the financial support is also very helpful, especially during my stay abroad in Finland, as the cost of living here is significantly higher than in Germany.
