“Engagement far beyond the ordinary”
TU Darmstadt’s DAAD Prize 2022 goes to a master’s student of Architecture
The prize of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for outstanding achievements by international students at the TU Darmstadt goes to Omar Dwedary, a master’s student in the Department for Architecture. The award is endowed with 1000 euros.
Omar Dwedary impressed the committee members with his short- and long-term commitment to both professional and non-professional social projects. The selection committee was particularly taken by Mr Dewardy’s resume and his commitment to democracy.
The selection committee’s statement reads: “We are presenting the DAAD Prize 2022 to Mr Omar Dwedary in recognition of his diverse social commitment far beyond the ordinary and his excellent academic achievements.” Omar Dwedary enriches our university and society: Not only through outstanding technical achievements, but also through multifaceted commitment to refugees, international students, people in need (flood disaster) and the reconstruction of his homeland, for which he has already used his professional expertise international team of architects during his bachelor’s degree.
After Mr Dwedary had to abandon his architecture studies in Syria due to the war, he quickly became involved with the German Red Cross in Rhineland Palatinate early on after his arrival. In 2018, he began his studies at the TU Darmstadt and shortly afterwards worked at the university’s International Student Services, where he still supports international students as a student assistant. In addition to this, he was involved in numerous associations and organisations, such as the project “Demokratie erfahrbar machen” in Berlin and Bonn with the Regional Association of Syrian Academics LSA-RLP.
The DAAD Prize is awarded annually at TU Darmstadt to international students in recognition of outstanding achievements and exceptional commitment. Endowed with 1000 euros per university and awarded for more than sixteen years, the DAAD Prize is intended to help put a face to the large number of foreign students at German universities and to connect them with stories.
A commission consisting of representatives from all status groups at the university (professors, students, academic staff), the ombudsperson for international students, and the International Affairs Directorate make the selection from among the nominated students.
Professors and staff members can nominate international students for the DAAD Award of TU Darmstadt. Nominations for the DAAD Prize 2023 are currently open until 15. May. The nomination form and a list of documents to be submitted are available at . www.tu-daramstadt.de/daad-preis
