TU Darmstadt decides on cuts
Institutes of Sport Science and Applied Geosciences affected
2025/12/19
Due to massive financial cuts in state funding as a result of the Hessian Higher Education Pact 2026-2031, the Executive Board of TU Darmstadt has decided on structural cuts: The Institute of Sport Science (IfS) will be closed, and the Institute of Applied Geosciences (IAG) will be downsized and relocated. The Executive Board's decisions mark the conclusion of a discussion process that has lasted several months.
The closure of the IfS (the IfS is part of the Department of Human Sciences), is scheduled for 31 December 2026. Vacant professorships at the IfS, or those that become vacant in the course of the coming year, will not be refilled. The remaining professors will continue their teaching and research activities in other areas of the TU.
The IAG, which is part of the Department of Materials- and Geosciences, will be closed on 31 December 2026. The professorships at the IAG will be relocated to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering on 1 January 2027. Geoscientific expertise will remain at the university in a reduced form. The integration of geosciences into civil and environmental engineering will enable development and sustainable profiling in research and teaching.
The sport science degree programmes and the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Applied Geosciences will be closed at the earliest possible date. The TU will ensure that all students already enrolled in these degree programmes have the opportunity to complete their studies within the standard period of study plus two semesters.
In both areas, the Executive Board is initiating a process to implement the upcoming changes in consultation with the employees affected and is supporting this process with the assistance of the university's specialist directorates.
The Hessian Higher Education Pact 2026-2031 is imposing massive austerity measures on the state's universities. The financial framework set by the pact makes it necessary to reduce costs on a permanent basis. This can only be achieved through long-termstructural savings. To this end, the Executive Board of TU Darmstadt initiated the ‘Project Focus’ to implement a focus on the strengths and core profile of the university. With the structural measures now decided upon, the Executive Board is managing the pressure to save money with the aim of limiting the damage to the university as a whole.
