New English-language Master’s programs at TU Darmstadt

Starting in the 2026/27 winter semester, TU Darmstadt will launch three internationally oriented Master’s programs in the Department of Biology. The English-language programs combine excellent research with practical training and are aimed at dedicated students from around the world who wish to combine scientific expertise with interdisciplinary skills and professional orientation. Applications are now being accepted.

The new master’s programs were developed through a participatory process involving students and are aligned with the department’s research priorities. In addition to a solid scientific education, they specifically foster skills that are central to a successful career in research, industry, or policy consulting.

The introductory module “Getting Started” systematically builds intercultural competencies, teamwork skills, and other interdisciplinary abilities. The program is further distinguished by its methodological breadth, critical thinking, and strong communication skills. At the same time, it fosters personal responsibility, reflective thinking, and collaboration in international contexts. In this way, students are prepared to examine complex biological issues from diverse perspectives and develop solutions to the challenges of a globally interconnected world.

M.Sc. in Ecology and Biodiversity

The Master’s program in Ecology and Biodiversity focuses on the interactions between organisms and their environment at all biological levels. The curriculum combines a broad foundation in ecological theory with intensive field and laboratory work and teaches methods for analyzing biological diversity in terrestrial and aquatic systems. The program is designed for students with a passion for the diversity of life and for researching ecological processes. Graduates are in demand at nature conservation organizations, planning offices, environmental agencies, research institutes, consulting firms, and projects dedicated to biodiversity conservation.

M.Sc. in Molecular and Cellular Biology

The Master’s program in Molecular and Cellular Biology provides a deep understanding of the molecular and cellular processes that make life possible. The program combines theoretical depth with intensive laboratory practice and prepares students for research careers in medicine, biotechnology, and basic research. The program is designed for students who wish to address complex biological questions at the molecular level. Graduates find career opportunities in research institutions, the pharmaceutical industry, clinical research, and data-driven biotech sectors.

M.Sc. Synthetic Biology

The Master’s program in Synthetic Biology combines biology and engineering into a modern, application-oriented education. Students learn to design and construct biological systems using engineering principles. Methods of genome and protein engineering, knowledge of mathematical modeling, programming skills, and concepts from biomaterials science and engineering are all part of the program. The program places particular emphasis on molecular biology and biotechnology methods, as well as on practical implementation in laboratories and project work. The program is aimed at students interested in applying biological principles in technical contexts. Three Master’s programmes in Ecology, Molecular Biology and Synthetic Biology will launch at TU Darmstadt in the 2026/27 winter semester. Dean of Studies Andreas Jürgens offers a preview of the new programmes.

Professor Jürgens, the new Master’s programmes are very focused in terms of subject matter. Why are these programmes needed right now?

The life sciences are changing rapidly. Many key issues for the future – from biodiversity loss to biotechnological innovations – now lie at the intersection of various disciplines. Our new Master’s programmes respond precisely to this. They offer research-oriented, methodologically broad and internationally focused training that specifically prepares students for these complex challenges. At the same time, the demand for highly qualified specialists in ecology, molecular biology and synthetic biology is growing worldwide. The programmes therefore provide an offering that combines scientific depth with clear career orientation.

What makes these degree programmes distinctive to TU Darmstadt?

The programmes are closely aligned with our department’s research priorities. Students learn through direct engagement with active research groups. Another hallmark of TU Darmstadt is its strong interdisciplinary focus: we combine biology with engineering, computer science and materials science. With the introductory module “Getting Started”, project-based formats and international teamwork, we also focus on teaching that strengthens students both professionally and personally.

What career opportunities will be available to graduates in the future?

Across all programmes, graduates are excellently prepared for careers in research, industry, policy consultancy, science management and international career paths that combine scientific expertise with interdisciplinary skills. Graduates of the “Ecology and Biodiversity” programme can work in nature conservation organisations, environmental agencies, planning offices, NGOs, as well as in ecological research and consultancy. Graduates of the “Molecular and Cellular Biology” programme are qualified for the pharmaceutical and biotech industries, clinical research, molecular diagnostics, basic research and data-driven biotechnology. Graduates of the Synthetic Biology programme are prepared for careers in biotechnology companies, start-ups, industrial research and development, as well as in the fields of bioengineering and biomaterial development.
