Prof. Dr. Jose Iovino, University of Texas at San Antonio

Abstract: Imagine a mathematical statement such that, once you have proved it, you know that a better, stronger version is true. In this talk we discuss criteria to identify such theorems. We will refer to them as "self-improving theorems",  and we will focus on self-improving theorems about convergence. Two key concepts will be: (1) the concept of "metastable convergence", which was introduced independently by Terence Tao and Ulrich Kohlenbach around 2007, and (2) the concept of ultraproduct of metric structures, which was introduced in the 1960's, in functional analysis, by Jean-Louis Krivine, by
borrowing ideas from model theory. The talk is intended to be accessible to students. The only prerequisite is the proverbial "mathematical maturity".
