Let's Unite! – Get to know Núria Garrido

The Unite! community introduces itself

2022/06/09

Unite! is a living and constantly growing alliance. Many people at the seven (soon to be nine) partner universities are working on different projects to make a European University a reality. In our series “Let's Unite! – Get to know…” we show who they are and what exactly they do, and this time we introduce Núria Garrido from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.

Núria Garrido is a UPC professor and researcher, and currently also the Vicepresident of UPC Alumni. Within Unite! she also works in TF6 (Mobility for all – Students) as part of the Internships workgroup. What she likes the most about her job is being with her students, as she likes to think that she can have a positive impact in their life. When she is not working, she loves to spend time with her family and friends. She's happy having dinner with them talking about anything: about life, laughing, dancing or even crying if it is necessary. For her, relationships with the people in her environment are the most important.

What future Unite! Project are you particularly excited about and why do you think it is important for Unite!’s strategy?

I am overly excited about Unite! Internships. I think it will be interesting for our students to do internships in any research lab of Unite! Universities. They will be able to join some of the best research groups around Europe and work with them!

Unite! Alliance Universities also acknowledge the growing contribution of researchers' performance towards a more inclusive, diverse, green, and digital society and towards the achievement of the SDG. Therefore, we are willing to promote the mobility of our students through the deployment of the “Unite! Internships” scheme/framework. The Unite! Internships aim to enhance and complement the students’ academic knowledge, improve their skills, and therefore facilitate their employability. Moreover, the added value of Unite! Internship will be the inclusion of soft skills training as an integral part of the training experience.

What is happening in your TF? Anything interesting to share with the Unite! community?

We are developing different initiatives to enhance the mobility of our students. Among them, I would like to highlight:

  • Virtual Exchange Concept courses: a catalogue has been created with different course proposals
  • Unite! Internships: the principles of a Unite! Internships have been agreed and a pilot experience will be carried out this year.
  • Open badge system: we are working on an open badge system to certify the international activities of our students.
  • Unite! summer schools: criteria for Unite! Joint Summers School courses have been agreed

From your point of view, what is the advantage of working or studying at a Unite! university? What do you think is special about the Unite! Network?

I would say the most valuable thing about working at a Unite! university it is the opportunity to meet and work with amazing people from other Universities who are interested and working hard to achieve the same goals as you. The potential of this network is outstanding, we share experience, knowledge and we learn from each other. We are creating the European University of the future. What could be more exciting?

About task force 6

The task force “Mobility4All Students” within TF6 works on the backbone of the Unite! alliance, which is the creation of a transnational multi-campus in which mobility at all levels, both horizontally and vertically, for all is a reality. This task force's main mission is to build a tight, well structured and sustainable “mobility for all” environment

About Unite!

Alongside TU Darmstadt as the coordinator, Unite! (University Network for Innovation, Technology and Engineering) also includes Aalto University (Finland), KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), Grenoble Institute of Technology (France), Politecnico di Torino (Italy), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Spain) and Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal).

The seven partner universities aim to use the European University to create a trans-European campus for students and researchers with the involvement of regions and companies. The partners have a total of 167,000 students, already cooperate closely in more than 80 EU projects and have exchanged more than 2,000 students in the past five years. The alliance has set itself the goal of combining courses for the benefit of students, breaking down existing technical and administrative hurdles, and thus significantly increasing student mobility. Research will also benefit from the conditions created for larger and easier cooperation, which will strengthen the competitiveness of the European Higher Education Area overall.
