The Chair of Wastewater Engineering at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering at Technische Universität Darmstadt, seeks candidates for a position as

Researcher/PhD candidate – 65%

starting 01.03.2020 for an initial appointment of 3 years.

About us:

The Chair of Wastewater Engineering deals with current topics in wastewater treatment, with a focus on an expanded understanding of the emergence and spread of resistant bacteria and genes, innovative methods for nutrient removal (N, P) and water reuse.

In this context, we use the integration of micro-molecular biological methods to understand and optimize processes in wastewater treatment. Another aspect of applied environmental microbiology is the characterization of microbial populations in systems for water/wastewater treatment but also in water and soil. We work with the most innovative molecular biological methods (digital PCR, next-generation sequencing in-house, flow cytometry, etc.) and use many years of experience for optimize these methods, as well as their further development for versatile applications in the context of (waste)water treatment.

To strengthen our team, we are looking for a natural scientist, biotechnologist or equivalent with a focus on environmental microbiology. More information can be found at https://www.iwar.tu-darmstadt.de/abwasserwirtschaft

Your tasks:

  • develop and apply new methods for the investigation of microbiological processes and the occurrence of bacteria and their dynamics in sewage/water/wastewater systems
  • collaborate in interdisciplinary research projects in the field of biological wastewater treatment, advanced trace pollutant elimination or method development
  • participate in the preparation of research proposals
  • supervise student work

We offer:

  • interesting and innovative research topics in the field of water and microbiology with plenty of scope for your own further development
  • a state-of-the-art molecular biology lab (qPCR, dPCR, Ion Torrent ™ Ion S5 Sequencer, Microplate Reader ...) to work on our research questions
  • working in an interdisciplinary team of civil, environmental and process engineers, and biotechnologists and microbiologists

We seek:

  • graduates with a degree (Diplom, Master) in biology, biotechnology, environmental or chemical engineering, or similar
  • experience in handling molecular biological methods (PCR, qPCR, cloning, sequencing) and in working with pure cultures
  • basic knowledge in bioinformatics is an advantage
  • willingness to actively participate in interdisciplinary work in a team and to familiarize yourself with new tasks
  • advanced skill of relevant software tools (Office, R, Gen databases, ...)
  • experience with working in S1/S2 areas
  • very good knowledge of spoken and written English

Opportunity for further qualification (doctoral dissertation) is given. The fulfillment of the duties likewise enables the scientific qualifications of the candidate.

The Technische Universität Darmstadt intends to increase the number of female employees and encourages female candidates to apply. In case of equal qualifications applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 or equal will be given preference. Wages and salaries are according to the collective agreements on salary scales, which apply to the Technische Universität Darmstadt (TV-TU Darmstadt).

Applications with the usual documents (letter of motivation, curriculum vitae, certificates) should be sent via E-mail in one single pdf-document referring to the given code-no. to the Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering (Dekanat@bauing.tu-darmstadt.de).
