At the department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany within the group “Bioinspired Communication Systems” of Prof. Heinz Koeppl the following position is available, starting as soon as possible:

PhD Position – Synthetic Biology

initially limited for 3 years, with the possibility to extend.

The aim is to discover general design principles for synthetic genetic circuits with the help of computational analysis and to provide experimental characterization methods on the single-cell level for synthetic biology. In collaboration with computational people, different synthetic circuits will be evaluated in a cell-free in-vitro setting and in-vivo based on the model organisms E. coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

The PhD student will work on the in-vitro and in-vivo implementation, analysis and optimization of synthetic circuits. Novel methods based on microfluidics and fluorescent microscopy will be developed to characterize the dynamic response profile of synthetic circuits. The student can resort to already established technology within the Koeppl Lab, such as microfluidic systems to run cell-free reactions at steady state conditions, droplet-based microfluidics to study cell-free reactions in batch mode and microfluidic single-cell traps to accurately track and quantify single cells. Engaging into joint theoretical and experimental work within the Koeppl Lab is highly encouraged.

Technische Universität Darmstadt provides the environment and support for publishing and presenting original research results at leading international conferences and in scientific journals.

Your profile:

  • Completed studies (M.Sc. or comparable) in biology, biochemistry, biophysics, biotechnology or equivalent
  • Wet-lab experience, in particular genetic engineering
  • Interested to work in the field of synthetic biology
  • Appreciation for interdisciplinary work and proactive drive to collaborate with computational people

Opportunity for further qualification (doctoral dissertation) is given. The fulfillment of the duties likewise enables the scientific qualifications of the candidate.

The Technische Universität Darmstadt intends to increase the number of female employees and encourages female candidates to apply. In case of equal qualifications applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 or equal will be given preference. Wages and salaries are according to the collective agreements on salary scales, which apply to the Technische Universität Darmstadt (TV-TU Darmstadt). Part-time employment is generally possible.

Your application must include

  • a cover letter explaining succinctly why you are interested in this position and why you believe you are the right candidate
  • a CV
  • a list of passed courses and obtained grades
  • contact details of at least two references (academic advisors) of yours
