The Ernst-Berl-Institute at Technical University Darmstadt is looking for a

PhD Electrochemistry/Materials Scientist

with a fixed-term contract for 3 years.

About us:

The TU Darmstadt is located in the south of Germany, close to Frankfurt. TU Darmstadt is one of the most renowned universities of technology in Germany with top rankings in research and teaching. Our highly qualified students are responsible for our outstanding position as a university which is recognized in the areas of science and engineering.

Our research concentrates on the preparation of heterogeneous catalysts and on the understanding of structure-performance indicators in electrocatalytic reactions. They are used in particular for electrochemical energy conversion in fuel cells, electrolysers and for CO2 reduction. An integral part of this work is the electrochemical characterization of materials and the elucidation of reaction and degradation mechanisms on a fundamental and applied level. The reactions studied include the oxygen reduction reaction, the oxygen evolution reaction, the hydrogen evolution reaction and the carbon dioxide reduction. Innovative, automated characterization techniques are used to evaluate the catalyst’s performance. This enables the examination of numerous materials in a short time and thus accelerates the discovery of new materials. The corresponding reaction mechanisms that are essential for understanding the underlying processes are examined. We work closely with various institutions and companies from all over the world, especially the USA, England and within Germany.

Your main tasks:

  • Preparation of heterogeneous oxide catalysts
  • Electrochemical evaluation of the prepared catalysts
  • The project is in close collaboration with the Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energy and the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg.

Your profile:

  • Master's degree in chemistry, material science, chemical engineering, physics or closely-related field
  • Excellent grades
  • You are interested in understanding physical phenomena
  • You are interested in the electrochemical evaluation of heterogeneous catalysts
  • You are motivated, team-minded, communicative, are able to work independently and be willing to pursue a PhD degree within a three years timeframe.
  • Great English speaking and writing abilities
  • Knowledge in electrochemistry is a plus, but not mandatory
  • Knowledge in the preparation of heterogeneous catalysis is a plus, but not mandatory

We offer:

We offer excellent working conditions in a motivated and interdisciplinary team. In an open environment you will have the freedom to develop and realize your own ideas.

Opportunity for further qualification (doctoral dissertation) is given. The fulfillment of the duties likewise enables the scientific qualifications of the candidate.

The Technische Universität Darmstadt intends to increase the number of female employees and encourages female candidates to apply. In case of equal qualifications applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 or equal will be given preference. Wages and salaries are according to the collective agreements on salary scales, which apply to the Technische Universität Darmstadt (TV-TU Darmstadt). Part-time employment is generally possible.

Your application:

Applicants should submit their CV and a Master's and Bachelor’s transcript detailing their interest and suitability for the position. A letter of motivation is not absolutely necessary. Please send your application, stating the given code. no. in the subject line, to the Dean´s Office of the Department of Chemestry, Technische Universität Darmstadt, Alarich-Weiss-Str. 4, 64287 Darmstadt, preferably per e-mail to: dekanat@chemie.tu-darmstadt.de
