As one of the largest technical universities in Germany, Technical University of Darmstadt is dedicated to questions of artificial intelligence at the highest scientific level. Among other things, it is a founding member and provides the headquarters for the Hessian Centre for Artificial Intelligence. The engineering faculties are concentrating on questions of innovative hardware implementations of AI systems and on questions of theories, methods and applications in the engineering sciences and are currently intensifying their activities in this area in research and teaching. In this context, Technical University of Darmstadt is advertising a total of two professorships in the context of AI in the engineering sciences with this professorship.

Data-infused Modeling in Structural Dynamics

commencing latest in summer semester 2022. The position is initially limited to six years.

We are looking for an up-and-coming academic talent with an excellent academic profile, documented by an outstanding relevant doctorate and publications in specialist journals. Candidates with follow-up potential, evidenced e.g. by joint publications with (international) colleagues or successful collaborative projects, and with experience in obtaining third-party funding, are particularly desired. German language skills are necessary, but may be obtained within the first years.

The professorship is to establish the newly created field of data-infused modelling of structural dynamics in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and represent it in research and teaching. Candidates are outstandingly qualified in one or more of the following subject areas in the context of data-infused modelling of structural dynamics:

  • System behaviour of structures under different dynamic loads
  • Linking modern methods from digitalisation, in particular Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Applied Artificial Intelligence in Civil Engineering with a focus on Machine Learning (Physics constraint AI, Reduced Order Modelling, Data-driven System Identification, Sensor Fusion)
  • Numerical methods and digital analysis methods
  • Sensor technology
  • Interface to sensor technology and statistical methods of sensor data evaluation of dynamic processes in building components

The research of the professorship should take on an interface function between AI and the engineering sciences in order to further advance interdisciplinary topics at this interface and to consolidate them in the department or to open up new research areas for the entire TU.

An excellent scientific CV is expected, which already shows initial successes and clearly demonstrates the candidate's development potential. Commitment to teaching in the Bachelor's and Master's programmes in civil and environmental engineering is valued. A willingness to participate in academic self-administration is required. A written teaching and research concept is to be submitted; it should also address cooperation intentions at the department and the university.

The assistant professorship is designated as a qualification professorship according to § 64 HHG (Hessisches Hochschulgesetz); it is initially financed as part of a joint federal and state program for the promotion of junior researchers (www.tenuretrack.de), whose regulations it also adheres to. Accordingly, the maximum period of scientific activities after the PhD degree should not exceed four years.

Remuneration follows the German W-Besoldung at level W2 Hessisches Besoldungsgesetz. The position is initially limited to six years. The position comes with the option of a tenured professorship after a successfully completed tenure process. The tenure process, which can be initiated one and a half years before the end of the assistant professorship, evaluates the corresponding achievements in research and teaching.
