starting as soon as possible and initially limited until December 31, 2024.

This vacancy is part of the BMWI-funded joint project 'ArtemIS' - Expansion of the Geothermal Information System GeotIS into an Internet portal for the heat transition in Germany - sub-project Geoscientific fundamentals, regional reservoir forecasting and designation of medium-depth potentials for heat utilization and storage.

With this joint project, the geothermal information system, GeotIS, will be upgraded to include medium-deep geothermal energy. With the research work, site-specific information from the geology and geothermal energy of the subsurface will be compiled on a scientifically sound basis and made publicly available via the Internet. In the future, GeotIS is to cover more areas that will become important for the implementation of the heat turnaround through medium-deep geothermal energy in Germany and at the same time be easier and more intuitive to use.

GeotIS will be technically improved and extended by a new feature: With the so-called "Heat-Transition-Site-Profile", the scientifically based information source GeotIS will reach a wider community of users, especially the municipal energy suppliers. Decision makers from business and politics will be supported by GeotIS in the implementation of the heat transition through geothermal energy on the basis of scientific results.

Your tasks:

  • 3D geological-geothermal modeling of the Upper Rhine Graben
  • Parameterization of the geological-geothermal models using borehole geophysical and petrophysical data
  • Reservoir simulations coupling thermal, hydraulic and mechanical parameters for the evaluation of economic reservoir parameters in doublet operation for already mapped reservoirs of medium-depth geothermal energy
  • Further development of geothermal potential identification methods for the classification and quantification of medium-deep geothermal potentials
  • Compilation of "Heat-Transition-Site-Profiles"on the heat supply infrastructure and geothermal potentials of all major cities in the study area
  • Publication of research results in scientific journals

Your skills:

  • Very good knowledge of geological 3D modeling and geoinformation systems
  • Very good knowledge of borehole geophysics
  • Good basic knowledge of geothermal energy systems and heat supply systems


  • University degree (Dipl. Univ./Master) in geosciences, geophysics or energy technologies
  • Very good language skills in German and English
  • Willingness to travel and driving license (class B)

Other desirable skills:

  • Experience and/or strong willingness to work in cooperative scientific teams
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary, deadline-oriented, goal-oriented and team-oriented manner
  • Advanced knowledge of the description of reservoir systems by hydrogeological and geothermal properties
