Your Duties:

The main focus is the preparation of an "Atlas of Mineralogical and Petrophysical Properties of German Crystalline Host Rocks" on behalf of the Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH (BGE). The working area is the distribution area of potential crystalline host rocks in southern to southeastern Germany.

Based on literature, geological maps and field work, you will:

  • record, describe, and take representative outcrop analog samples as well as drill cores in field and drill core camp sampling campaigns,
  • determine petrophysical, thermophysical, and rock mechanical properties, as well as petrological and geochemical composition of rock samples in our state-of-the-art HydroThermic research and teaching laboratory,
  • compile field data and laboratory measurements of rock properties in a database, evaluate them geostatistically and present them in maps,
  • investigate influences of pressure and temperature on mechanical, thermal parameters as input data for the database.

All this work is done in close cooperation with the BGE and in coordination with the State Geological Services (SGD) of the respective federal states. We expect you to work in close cooperation and in intensive technical exchange with the BGE and the SGD both in the organization and coordination of the field work, as well as in laboratory work.

The results of your work should contribute a significant increase in knowledge about the mineralogical and petrophysical properties of crystalline rocks in southern Germany. We are therefore looking for highly motivated collaborators with a strong interest in the previously mentioned topics.

Your profile:

  • You have a Master's degree or excellent equivalent degree in geosciences with visible references to petrophysics, rock mechanics and mineralogy, petrology
  • You are highly motivated and experienced in field and laboratory work
  • You have experience with geographic information systems (GIS), geostatistics, and data management
  • Experience with database development and construction is an advantage
  • You have excellent German language skills and very good English language skills
  • You are highly motivated to publish your results, to present them at project meetings or international conferences and to process them into a dissertation
  • You are very communicative and enjoy working in interdisciplinary and international teams

We offer:

We offer a professional research environment as well as support in the presentation and publication of research results at national and international conferences and in specialist journals. Additionally, there will be many opportunities to work with international collaboration partners from academia and industry through our joint research projects. Modern computer and laboratory equipment is available.

Opportunity for further qualification (doctoral dissertation) is given. The fulfillment of the duties likewise enables the scientific qualifications of the candidate.
