Postdoc position in the Cell Biology and Epigenetics group – 50%

The appointment is initially for three years with the possibility of a one-year extension.

The research project is part of the interdisciplinary project FLOW FOR LIFE (www.tu-darmstadt.de/flowforlife) funded by the state of Hesse, Germany. The aim of FLOW FOR LIFE is to develop an artificial supply network for three-dimensional organ-like cell aggregates. FLOW FOR LIFE offers an open, supportive, dynamic and motivating academic environment and cutting edge research projects. Within the sub-project C4, research on 3D microscopic analysis of hybrid organ-like cell aggregates will be performed.

We are an international and interactive team and are looking for a motivated scientist with interest in light microscopy of large 3D organ-like systems and the ability to interact and effectively collaborate within an interdisciplinary environment. The project involves establishing clearing and sample preparation protocols combined with detection of differentiated cell types in organ-like samples up to the centimeter size range using light sheet microscopy. Close interactions will take place with Professor Ulrike Nuber’s group regarding the organ-like culture material and with Professor Heinz Köppl’s group regarding 3D image analysis and modeling. Additional interactions are expected with several of the groups developing the scaffold systems the groups as well as the culture chamber and nutrient+oxygen supply.

Required qualifications and experience:

  • A postgraduate degree (doctorate or equivalent) in a relevant field (e.g. Biology, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Biotechnology)
  • Experience in mammalian cell culture with emphasis on 3D systems
  • Tissue staining and immunofluorescence expertise
  • Hands-on expertise on tissue/organ clearing protocols
  • Hands-on experience in using light sheet microscopes
  • Ability to conduct independent research
  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team
