Technische Universität (TU) Darmstadt, with its Unit of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS, ellis.eu), is looking to fill a position as

Science Manager ELLIS Unit Darmstadt (all genders)

for an initial five-year contract to coordinate and implement the broad-range of ELLIS-related activities of the ELLIS Unit at TU Darmstadt.

TU Darmstadt, particularly through its Department of Computer Science, is one of Europe’s leading universities in the area of artificial intelligence (AI). The local AI environment strongly benefits from the recently established, state-funded Hessian Center for Artificial Intelligence (hessian.AI), which is headquartered in Darmstadt and will establish 22 new faculty positions in AI across the participating institutions.

The European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) is a diverse European network that promotes research excellence and advances breakthroughs in AI, offers a pan-European PhD program to educate the next generation of AI researchers, as well as aims to boost economic growth in Europe by leveraging AI technologies. The recently established Darmstadt Unit in the ELLIS network connects the research, educational, and transfer activities at TU Darmstadt to ELLIS.

You will be responsible for maintaining and furthering the networking activities between researchers at TU Darmstadt and the ELLIS network, including other ELLIS units and renowned ELLIS researchers across Europe. Moreover, you will act as contact point for ELLIS in the quickly expanding and highly dynamic AI ecosystem in Darmstadt, including the Hessian Center for Artificial Intelligence (hessian.AI).

Your tasks will include:

  • Management, coordination, and implementation of varied activities connected to the ongoing development and strategic expansion of the ELLIS Unit Darmstadt
  • Networking with international and national partners in ELLIS and coordinating the communication and joint initiatives, including joint funding or international exchange and visitor programms
  • Strategic and operational support of the participating scientists of the ELLIS Unit, such as of regular board meetings or for applications and the administration of funding programs
  • Active development of the ELLIS unit’s internal and external stakeholder network
  • Organization and evaluation of various scientific initiatives and events (e.g., exchange and visitor programmes, hackathons, or summer schools)

You offer:

  • a M.Sc. degree in computer science, cognitive science, mathematics, or engineering
  • a background in AI, especially in machine learning or a machine learning-driven field (e.g., computer vision, NLP, robotics) is desired; a Ph.D. in such a field is a further plus
  • Experience in and high motivation for science management
  • Strong interest in the research areas of ELLIS and TU Darmstadt’s AI ecosystem
  • Analytical and critical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to diligently manage a broad range of different responsibilities
  • a creative, collaborative, dependable, and self-reliant approach
  • The ability to interact with members of the scientific community and administrators at all levels of seniority
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written fluency in English
  • Verbal and written fluency in German, or the willingness to acquire fluency
