The Advanced Thin Film Technology (ATFT) group at the Institute of Materials Science at TU Darmstadt invites applications for a position as

Ph.D. candidate (all genders) – 75 %

Employed with a fixed-term contract for 3 years in the area of sustainable “green” magnetic materials based on iron.

Within a new collaborative research center (CRC/SFB 1487) funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), we intend to design materials with novel magnetic functionalities based on the most abundant element iron (Fe). In the project, the idea is to modify iron thin films using other common elements such as nitrogen, boron or carbon in such a way that Fe becomes a permanent magnetic material as strong as the best permanent magnets known today. The experimental techniques will include modern thin film deposition (molecular beam epitaxy), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and extensive magnetic characterizations by a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID).

This project is part of a collaborative research centre (CRC) which means that a large number of fellow PhD students will work on related topics forming a lively and creative joint research atmosphere.

Required qualification:

Excellent candidates with a M.Sc. from materials science, physics or equivalent need to have a good knowledge of solid-state physics and magnetic properties. Background and practical experience in vacuum technology, thin film deposition and magnetic characterization are a valuable advantage. Excellent communication skills also in english(spoken and written) for interdisciplinary work in our international team are required.

For additional information contact: Prof. Dr. Lambert Alff, E-mail:

Opportunity for further qualification (doctoral dissertation) is given. The fulfillment of the duties likewise enables the scientific qualifications of the candidate.

The Technische Universität Darmstadt intends to increase the number of female employees and encourages female candidates to apply. In case of equal qualifications applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 or equal will be given preference. Wages and salaries are according to the collective agreements on salary scales, which apply to the Technische Universität Darmstadt (TV-TU Darmstadt).

Application process:

The application needs to include a letter of motivation, CV, B.Sc., M.Sc./Diploma certificates and grades and at least two letters of reference or recommendation. Please send your application by E-Mail in one single pdf file with the reference number to Prof. Lambert Alff – E-Mail:
