The Ceramics group at the Department of Materials and Earth Science at TU Darmstadt focuses on the development of new electroceramics. This international group of about 20 researchers is one of the worldwide leaders in the development of lead-free piezoceramics.

We are looking for a talented and highly motivated person who is interested in developing new evaluation methods based on machine learning algorithms. The person would obtain a doctoral position funded by the state of Hessen. In cooperation with rhd instruments GmbH & Co. KG, a leading company in the field of evaluation software for frequency-dependent electrical measurements, appropriate algorithms are used to facilitate the use of impedance spectroscopy for industry and academic research. This method is essential for the description of electrical processes in batteries, fuel cells, capacitors, etc.

At the TU Darmstadt we offer a position as

PhD candidate (all genders) – 50 %

with a fixed-term contract of initially three years. A separate employment at rhd instruments GmbH & Co. KG (20h/week) will also be offered.

Your profile:

Essential requirements:

  • Excellent Master degree in informatics, natural or technical science
  • Strong interest in scientific research and above-average motivation to manage the Ph.D. project in cooperation with industry
  • Good programming knowledge (Python or C++)
  • Very good knowledge of spoken and written English

Desired skills:

  • Strong academic background in one or more of the following subjects: electronics, electrochemistry, computer science
  • Experience or Master's thesis in a related topic/research area
  • Practical experience * in one or more of the following topics: impedance spectroscopy, machine learning, capacitors, batteries, fuel cells
    * Please list these in your resume only if you are directly involved in the experimentation. Assistance from a technician/assistant does not count as hands-on experience.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Demonstrated ability for independent scientific research

Your tasks:

The project includes the analyzes of impedance spectra using machine learning algorithms. The model creation and sorting of large amounts of impedance data include the generation of start parameter values and an automated evaluation. Working with real and simulated impedance measurements. Creation of models to combine impedance results with other metadata (e.g., measurement conditions, synthesis parameters of energy materials). Implementation of the models in the commercial software from rhd instruments GmbH & Co. KG in collaboration with Dr. Jens Wallauer (Manager Software Development).

Opportunity for further qualification (doctoral dissertation) is given. The fulfillment of the duties likewise enables the scientific qualifications of the candidate.
