The Embedded Systems and Applications Group (ESA) at the Computer Science Department of the Technische Universität of Darmstadt (Germany) has an open position for a
as a three-year fixed-term employment, subject to the final approval of the funding by the project sponsor. The planned start date is September 1st, 2019.
The research assistant will perform R&D tasks in a joint project on design methodology for digital circuits. Specifically, the project deals with the use of FPGAs to accelerate a virtual hardware/software-co-design platform by executing part of the design in actual hardware on the FPGA and enabling it to interact with the software-based parts of the simulation (SystemC models). The project aims to develop prototypes for such an accelerated virtual platform, including the capability to exploit FPGA resources in the cloud.
Achieving this not only needs hardware design, but also the development of supporting software tools (e.g., automatic generation of interface code between the FPGA and the software-based simulator). To this end, the position requires well-rounded experience in digital logic design (e.g., Verilog, VHDL, ideally also Chisel and/or Bluespec, logic synthesis, simulation etc.), systems-on-chip architecture (e.g., pipelines, system-level interfaces such as AXI to PCIe and DRAM), as well as low-level programming (e.g., Linux kernel, C, assembly, GNU toolchain, JTAG debugging). Additionally, the candidate should have solid prior experience in working with current Xilinx FPGA design tools (including mapping/P&R, system-on-chip composition, IP integration). For implementing the tools to use the hardware-accelerated virtual platform (e.g., creating configuration bitstreams), experience in software development, e.g., using Java and/or C++ and using utilities such as ANTLR, will be helpful. The required basic knowledge of SystemC can be acquired during the project.
The position requires a very good university-level degree in one of the study programmes listed above, as well as excellent methodical and analytical capabilities. Additionally, good oral and written communication skills at least in the English language, preferably also extending to German, are mandatory.
Opportunity for further qualification (doctoral dissertation) is given. The fulfillment of the duties likewise enables the scientific qualifications of the candidate.
