President Jefferson championed the mastodon as a symbol in the debate against prevailing European beliefs about the fauna of the New World. Despite museum fires elsewhere, Peale’s Mastodon found its way to Darmstadt in 1854, eventually becoming a prized exhibit at the Hessian State Museum since 1906.
