Film “Coded Bias – Preprogrammed Discrimination”

The Gender Equality Office invites you to watch the movie “Coded Bias” as part of our yearlong programme on unconscious bias.

We expect artificial intelligence to help us make neutral or even objectively correct decisions, for example when choosing the best candidate for a job. The movie “Coded Bias” shows how this presumption is dangerously wrong, how people are discriminated against by algorithms based on sex, gender, name, or skin-color. It explores the fallout of MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini´s startling discovery that facial recognition does not accurately recognise dark-skinned faces and women, and her journey to push for the first-ever legislation in the U.S. to govern against bias in the algorithms that impact us all.
