Expedition Depression

A themed evening about depression

2024/10/25

It is estimated that a quarter of all people between the ages of 18 and 25 are affected by depression or anxiety disorders. Students are particularly affected by this development. The situation has become even worse in the last two years. In addition to the pressure to perform at university, the coronavirus pandemic has been a further factor. This has had a significant impact on the lives of German students. Isolation and loneliness, reduced motivation and hopelessness in the face of persistent pressure and stress are the result. Students' need for psychological counseling has recently increased enormously.

Film Synopsis

Five young adults go on a road trip across Germany.

As different as they are, they all have one thing in common: they experienced depression as children or teenagers and had to learn to accept it as part of their lives. On their journey together, they want to find out more about the illness, its treatment and how to deal with it.They also address the question: What can help other teenagers and young adults deal with depression?

Michaela Kirst (director and producer) and Axel Schmidt (filmmaker and specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy) have joined them on their journey.Together with the Deutsche DepressionsLiga e.V. (supported by the AOK – Die Gesundheitskasse), they have created an impressive and touching documentary that provides information about this serious illness.

“Expedition Depression” not only provides answers – thanks to the openness of the five protagonists, it gives it a face and sends three important messages: Depression can affect anyone, depression is treatable, and “You are not alone”.
