KogWis 2018

14th biannual conference of the German Society for Cognitive Science, GK

2018/09/10

“KogWis 2018 – Computational Approaches to Cognitive Science” has been hosted by TU Darmstadt / Centre for Cognitive Science from 03-06 September 2018 at Technische Universtiät Darmstadt. The conference ended with more than 160 participants. The scientific program included a line-up of six international keynote speakers, which we were honoured to welcome, 35 contributed talks and around 60 poster presentations.

Keynotes

  • Tessa Dekker (University College London) presented recent work on how sophisticated abilities in perception and action are learned throughout development.
  • Frances Egan (Rutgers University) investigated the use of the concept of representation in computational cognitive models.
  • Noah Goodman (Stanford University) discussed the application of methods from probabilistic machine learning to explain how language works.
  • Maté Lengyel (University of Cambridge & CEU) gave an overview of his computational work relating statistical properties of the environment to properties of internal cognitive models explaining behavioral and neural phenomena.
  • Iris van Rooij (Radboud University Nijmegen) demonstrated the relevance of complexity theory in understanding fundamental problems in computational models of cognition.
  • Christopher Summerfield (University of Oxford) presented recent work on understanding why humans are still superior to any artificial intelligence and how this understanding could lead to stronger AI systems.

Thanks

We would like to thank the many people at TU Darmstadt including the administrative assistants and all the student volunteers who have helped making this conference happen. We would also like to thank the Gesellschaft für Kognitionswissenschaft (GK) and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) that has, again, helped with funding.
