Successful next step in the Excellence Strategy

2024/02/02

TU Darmstadt has the opportunity to establish three Clusters of Excellence – a great prospect for the Centre of Cognitive Science (CCS) too

Great success for TU Darmstadt: TU Darmstadt has reached a milestone in the Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments. It has been selected to submit full proposals for its draft proposals “Reasonable Artificial Intelligence” (RAI), “The Adaptive Mind” (TAM) and “CoM2Life” in the fields of artificial intelligence, cognitive science and biomaterials and to apply for funding under the Cluster of Excellence funding line. The selection was made by an international panel of experts. A total of 143 draft proposals were submitted to the German Research Foundation (DFG), 41 of which may now submit a full proposal in the second round of calls.

Members of the Centre for Cognitive Science are involved in all three initiatives. The principal investigators of the Centre for Cognitive Science are particularly involved in RAI (6 CCS PIs) and TAM (5 PIs and 3 affiliated CCS PIs).

Highly competitive selection procedure

The Excellence Strategy is a funding programme of the German federal and state governments to strengthen cutting-edge research in Germany. Projects must overcome a highly competitive, multi-stage selection procedure in order to receive funding. The decisions on which projects can establish new Clusters of Excellence and which existing clusters that were set up during the first round of proposals will receive continued funding will be made in May 2025. Funding can be provided to a total of up to 70 Clusters of Excellence and the German federal and state governments provide total funding of 539 million euros per year for this purpose.
