State Secretary Nimmermann visits EnEff-Campus

2023/11/06

Philipp Nimmermann, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, visited the EnEff:Stadt Campus Lichtwiese project at TU Darmstadt on Friday (November 3).

He was welcomed by TU Vice President Martin Lommel, Professor Matthias Oechsner, Vice President for Research, and Professor Christoph Kuhn, head of the EnEff-Campus project, at the Design and Sustainable Building subject group in the Department of Architecture.

Lommel described the EnEff-Campus as a win-win situation, as the TU itself can conduct research into energy saving here. Oechsner emphasized the possibility of being able to quickly transfer the research into broad applications, as well as the high climate policy and economic benefits. Participating scientists then presented the EnEff project and the Lichtenberg II high-performance computer as an example of an application: the waste heat from the computer is integrated into the district heating system.

In the EnEff:Stadt Campus Lichtwiese research project, TU Darmstadt is investigating how the energy transition can be shaped at district level. For example, researchers are creating a virtual overall model of the campus energy system. In the long term, the “digital twin” should make it possible to optimize the university's efficient energy supply with electricity, heating and cooling in real time. mih
