Leading yourself, leading others – Leadership in scientific environments (May 13th, 2019)
9 am – 5 pm
Leadership in scientific environments has specific characteristics: individual goals, a high degree of freedom, little defined structure combined with strong hierarchies. Additionally, leaders of a scientific team have to follow defined career-steps with little space to come up with own ideas concerning structural changes or rewards of employees. Also, they face the science specific conflict of autonomy versus strong dependence on their own supervisors. Further challenges are a high fluctuation, the recruiting of talents in a field of high international competition, development and integration of constantly changing employees and to remain interesting as a scientific institution for the high performers who also focus on their own individual careers. Last but not least, leaders in science also need to focus on their own scientific career and need to split their time between research and management tasks – for the latter they do not get any rewards in the end.
