PhD position

The Biology Department of the TU Darmstadt (Darmstadt University of Technology), Germany, invites applications for a

PhD position – 50%

in the Stem Cell and Developmental Biology group. The appointment is for three years.

This is an exciting opportunity to perform research on iPS cell-based disease models. Improved three-dimensional cell cultures (organoids) are to be developed from neural-induced human iPS cells. Human iPS cells are genetically modified by means of CRISPR/ Cas and the three-dimensional development of cell cultures is examined using different methodologies including fluorescence microscopy. In addition, optogenetic methods are developed and applied.

We are looking for a highly motivated and creative personality who is interested in the development of novel cell culture systems and in molecular neurobiology and who enjoys working on an independent project within an international team.

Required qualifications and experience

  • A Master degree in a relevant field (e.g. biology, biotechnology, molecular medicine, biochemistry).
  • Very good cell culture skills and a careful way of working; practical experience with iPS cells or primary mammalian cells is of advantage.
  • Very good molecular methods skills.
  • Strong ambition to develop into an independent scientist.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Very good English language skills.

Opportunity for further qualification (doctoral dissertation) is given. The fulfillment of the duties likewise enables the scientific qualifications of the candidate.
