LokoAssist Symposium 2023

LokoAssist addresses the interdisciplinary challenge of seamless integration of active locomotion devices (orthoses, exoskeletons, prostheses) into the daily movement experience of the user. LokoAssist is a multidisciplinary Ph.D. Research Training Network granted by the German Research Foundation (DFG). This inaugural LokoAssist Symposium gathers leading scientists in these cutting-edge research areas. It covers a range of closely related topics, from biomechanical modeling and mechatronic design of assistive devices to psychological aspects of locomotion and human and expert evaluation.

  • Mechatronic design of assistive devices concerning drive concepts, materials, sensors, and actuators and their integration into assistive systems
  • Modeling of locomotion including with/without perturbations based on biomechanics and machine learning methods
  • Assistance scenarios and their evaluation, including user (e.g., Human-in-the-loop optimization) and expert (e.g., practitioners) feedback
  • User perspective and body representation

The LokoAssist Symposium will be held at the Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Haus in Darmstadt, located in the Dieburger Strasse 241, 64287 Darmstadt.

Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Haus is historical monument, and an example of the unique Art Noveau architectural style that has become a landmark in Darmstadt, which has helped the city gain international prominence

Useful Travel Information

The nearest airport and also the best airport for international participants is Frankfurt am Main as the AirLiner bus to Darmstadt Central Station leaves directly at the airport.

Travel time with Deutsche Bahn from Berlin to Darmstadt takes about 5 hours and from Munich to Darmstadt about 3.5 hours.

However, you will arrive in Darmstadt by train or AirLiner bus at the Darmstadt Central Station. If you want to use the local transportation to the conference venue Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Haus, please take bus F from the Central Station to Fasanerie/NF.

If you travel by car, use the highway A5 (from Frankfurt/M. respectively Heidelberg/Basel) or the highway A67 (from Köln/Wiesbaden respectively Mannheim). Leave the highway at the exit 26 “Darmstädter Kreuz” to Darmstadt. After leaving the highway follow the Rheinstrasse and the traffic signs to “TU-Stadtmitte” (TU-Citycentre). Use the Cityring-Tunnel and after leaving the tunnel turn left into the Hügelstrasse. After the traffic lights turn left into the Kirchstrasse. Straight ahead at the next big crossing until the next traffic light and then turn right into the Alexanderstrasse. After a while the Alexanderstrasse will become the Dieburger Strasse. The conference venue Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Haus is then located in the Dieburger Strasse 241.
