Junior HoMMage Doctoral Retreats and Summer School

Junior HoMMage Doctoral Retreat

The three-day Junior HoMMage Doctoral Retreat takes place every year. On the one hand, it serves the scientific qualification of the PhDs students by intensive discussion about the research projects. On the other hand, the retreat offers the PhD candidates a very good platform for exchange and communication among each other and serves also as team-building measure. The retreat is organized by the PhD candidates themselves with support of the MGK office. By the self-dependent organization, the PhD candidates also gain important organizational experience.

2023 PhD Retreat in Mülheim an der Ruhr

For the last PhD retreat of the first funding period, the PhDs came together in Mülheim an der Ruhr at the Akademie Die Wolfsburg from 16 to 18 January 2023. Here they participated in an FDM/eLab FTW workshop and reflected on gender-typical behavior and how to counteract it in a gender workshop. There was also plenty of time for scientific exchange and networking during a free discussion session. During a torchlight tour in the Landschaftspark Duisburg Nord the PhDs gained insight into the industrial culture of the Ruhr area. On the last day, all PhDs visited the laboratories of the working groups at the University of Duisburg.

2022 PhD Retreat in Panabora/Waldbröl

The third PhD Retreat from 29 June to 1 July 2022 took place in beautiful summer weather at the youth hostel Panabora/Waldbröl. In short lectures and poster presentations, the PhD students presented the status of their work. As a guest, Dr. Thomas Feggeler could be welcomed, who spoke about the “Element- specific imaging of magnetization and its dynamics using time-resolved X-ray microscopy”. During a hike and a common barbecue there was enough time to deepen the cooperations.

2021 PhD Retreat

The second retreat from 1 to 2 December 2021 was again held virtually due to the Corona situation. In the context of a poster presentation, the PhDs presented the progress of their research and discussed the status of their work. In a workshop, the PhDs were trained on the topic of “Intercultural Collaboration”. As guest speaker Dr. Tino Gotschall talked about “Magnetic cooling: From materials to application”.

2020 PhD Kick-off Retreat

The first PhD retreat of the funding period took place from 26 to 27 October 2020 and thus during the height of the corona pandemic with the necessary contact restrictions. But our PhDs made the best of it and organized a virtual meeting. In short presentations, the PhDs introduced their topics to each other. Dr. John Joseph Uhlrich gave a guest lecture on “Publishing Scientific Research & How to Write High- Impact Research Papers”. Team building was not neglected either – the PhD students were able to demonstrate their presentation skills during a PowerPoint karaoke.

Summer School 2022

The summer school organized by the CRC/TRR takes place once per funding period so that every PhD student attends one summer school. A part of the program is organized by the PhD students. The summer school offers a compact lecture program related to the different topics of the CRC/TRR. The lectures are given by leading external scientists and do not only cover fundamental research topics of the CRC/TRR but also include insights into industrial research within the topic of electromobility and magnetocaloric materials for cooling applications. The summer school allows the PhD students to get in contact with well- known external national and international researchers in the research field of the CRC/TRR. The compact format of the summer school allows also interaction and exchange among the PhD students of the MGK. The summer school of the first funding period took place from 25th to 29th April 2022 in DJH Jugendherberge Bonn.
