Sharing and publishing data

At TU Darmstadt, several services are available to share data within the working group or with external parties.

HRZ Fileservice – within TU Darmstadt

For a fee, the HRZ offers central network drives starting at 100 GB. Access and rights management is performed via TU-ID.

Hessenbox-DA – Synchronise and share, also with external partners

The popular commercial providers of sync&share services (e.g. Dropbox) cannot satisfy the scientific data requirements on security, confidentiality and access protection.

We therefore recommend use of Hessenbox-DA. Employees of TU Darmstadt are provided100 GB and students 30 GB of storage space free of charge. The Hessenbox stores data at the University of Gießen with all data transfers encrypted.

Gigamove – Making large amounts of data available

TU Darmstadt enables use of the exchange platform GigaMove, which is operated by RWTH Aachen University. This file exchange platform is a good solution for large files whose size precludes, for example, sending as e-mail attachments. The size limit ist 100 GB per file with a total of 1 TB being available free of charge per user for making files available. By default, the uploaded files are kept for 7 days which can be extended to a maximum of 14 days, after which they are deleted from the server.

Users who want to distribute a file can upload it and then send a download link to the recipients. Conversely, it is also possible to request files from others by sending a link to a form where the file can be uploaded.

TUdatalib – storing cold data

TUdatalib is the institutional repository of the TU Darmstadt for research data created or worked with at the TU. The repository is suitable for data that is changed rarely or not at all (“cold data”) and should be archived securely. This data can also be made available to others via TUdatalib.
