In this area, there are few studies in the literature that are essentially limited to simple visualizations of burning particles. Both investigations of the mutual interaction of particles with the surrounding gas phase on the level of individual particles and systematic data sets for the validation of numerical simulations are missing. Therefore, in this subproject, measurements at the single particle level will be performed on generic test rigs with boundary conditions as well defined as possible.
Scientific questions:
- Which parameters (particle size, equivalence ratio, particle number density) influence the ignition process?
- Do reactions take place in the gas phase leading to nanometer-sized iron oxide particles? If yes, what parameters influence this process?
- What residence times are necessary to completely reduce or oxidize iron oxide particles in reducing environments or iron particles in oxidizing environments?
- How are the reaction and transport processes affected by small particle spacing in particle clouds?
